— Thursday Hike: Skunk Harbor, Lake Tahoe hosted by Muscle Powered. 8 a.m. Join Muscle Powered for its free leader-led hikes each week to enjoy Nevada outdoors around Carson City and Lake Tahoe! Meet at the Highway 50 Park and Ride where we will carpool to the trailhead where parking is limited. Departing promptly at 8 a.m. to the trailhead, so be there 15 minutes early. Water and sturdy closed-toe shoes required. Hat, sunscreen and hiking poles recommended. Bring a friend and/or friendly dogs. All hikes are 2-4 miles with duration of about 90 minutes, sometimes with elevation gains of 500’ or more. In case of bad weather or air quality due to smoke is unsafe, we will cancel. — Capital City Arts Initiative Presents: Graphically Defined. 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. This a group exhibition of work by 17 Western Nevada College students. This exhibit includes a wide variety of art including ceramics, drawing, graphic design, painting and photography that shows the diversity of the students’ creativity. — Capital City Arts Initiative presents 'New Crop 2019' exhibit. 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Capital City Arts Initiative presents its exhibition, "New Crop 2019", by artists Mark Combs and Frances Melhop at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery. The Courthouse is located at 885 E Musser Street, Carson City. The reception and the exhibition are free and the public is cordially invited. The gallery is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sculptor Mark Combs gives viewers two approaches to his metalwork. His earlier distressed metal car-part sculptures are ornamented with soldered rods and bolts reflecting a ruptured system both socially and figuratively. His carefully hammered bone pieces came into shape after hours of forging as a nod to death and celebrations of life. Photographer Frances Melhop documents aging rural structures with classic color photography. In Vanish, her printed enlargements of unnamed 19th century portraits on silk are elevated to fly across our vision like fleeting memories.
— Carson City Cooperative Extension 2 Day Camps: How to Raise Small Farm Critters. 8:30 a.m. Carson City University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, in partnership with Carson City Parks and Recreation and Friends of Silver Saddle Ranch, is offering two weekly sessions at Silver Saddle Ranch, 2648 Carson City Road in Carson City, for youth who are not able to keep or raise a small farm animal to experience working with either rabbits or goats. Area 4-H leaders will bring their animals for attendees, 9 – 14 years of age, to work with in these hands on day camps. Attendees will learn what it takes to select and raise a rabbit or goat – handling, health and nutrition, showing, housing and how to have fun. A fee of $50 per attendee, per camp, includes water, snacks and basic educational materials. Week Two: Funny and Fabulous Goats – June 25 – 28, 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Please call the Carson City Cooperative Extension office at 775-887-2252 to register for one or both day camps.
— Creative Kids Camp offered at Carson City's Brewery Arts Center. 9 a.m. This year, the Creative Kids Camp at Carson City's Brewery Arts Center is exploring nature through arts and crafts. Children can create a variety of items inspired by nature including garden stepping stones and rock accents. Dragon flies will soar in and out of a yard. We will capture the wind in a water bottle. And feeding the flighty feathered friends will be fun. And among other crafts, we may find some silly snails. See the video here. Kids ages 6-13 will make items great for the garden or indoors. All inspired by nature. The Creative Kids Camp runs June 24-28 from 9 a.m. to noon.
— Children's Museum in Carson City to host summer science camp. 9 a.m. The Children's Museum in Carson City will host a Summer Science Camp this year. Participants will get hands on lessons in science, art, music and literary projects tied to the Carson River watershed, as well as learning about regional geology and mining, geothermal and solar energy, biomes of Northern Nevada and hot air balloons. The Science Camp is sponsored by Southwest Gas. The camp is $100 per child for Children's Museum of Northern Nevada members and $150 per child for non-members. — Nevada Artists Association Presents: Spirit of America. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 449 W. King St. in Carson City. Spirit of America is a judged show with ribbons for the Spirit of America winner, 1st, 2nd and 3rd place and honorable mention winners in each category. The reception and awards presentation will be Saturday, June 22 from 2:00-4:00 p.m.
— Family Storytime at the Carson City Library. 10:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. at 900 N. Roop St. Weekly themed singing, stories, finger-plays, or art centered around a book. Participants 9 and under must be accompanied by a caregiver of at least 13 years of age at all times.
— Carson City's Food For Thought to provide daily no cost lunches for kids this summer. Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to noon. In a last minute announcement, Carson City based non-profit Food For Thought, Inc. will continue the Summer Lunch Program during the 2019 season. The program provides free and nutritious lunches to all children under 18. Lunch must be eaten onsite and will be served daily, Monday thru Friday, from 11 a.m. until 12 p.m. in Carson City starting Monday, June 17 until August 9. This year only one serving location is available and will take place at The Bridge Church at 901 N. Stewart Street, Carson City. The Summer Lunch Program provides meals to area children who are unable to access other lunch programs during the months off from school.
— Food Truck Thursdays featured at Mills Park in Carson City. Noon to 9 p.m. Food Truck Thursdays will take place every 2nd and 4th Thursday throughout the summer at Mills Park in Carson City. Come check out Carson City's growing outside eateries while enjoying some live music in beautiful Mills Park. Event runs from noon to 9 p.m. The first Thursday featured the Bus Boy Mobile Cuisine, Kim’s Kool Treats, and Press Coffee & Waffles with music by Farris Neon. Asian Street Eats will be joining this Thursday with more trucks joining each event.
— Carson City Kiwanis moves weekly meetings to The Martin Hotel. Noon. Carson City Kiwanis moved its weekly meeting to The Martin Hotel. The decision to move was not a difficult one as The Martin Inn has an excellent meeting facility located in the back of its restaurant. Carson City Kiwanis members are excited about the move as the room is large enough to grow, invite guests, and be able to stay in downtown Carson City. As Carson City Kiwanis celebrates its 60-year anniversary, it looks to continue to be a great service club in this great community. Carson City Kiwanis invites you to attend an upcoming meeting. — Lego Club at the Carson City Library. 4 to 6 p.m. at 900 N. Roop St. Build self-led creations through hands-on learning with LEGO Education materials. Participants 9 and under must be accompanied by a caregiver of at least 13 years of age at all times.
— Thursday means its Farmers Market day in Dayton. 4 to 7 p.m. Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties hosts its farmers market in Dayton for the 10th summer. The market is Thursday evenings from 4 to 7 p.m. It is co-located with Healthy Communities’ new community garden, known as the Solidarity Garden. This will offer market patrons the opportunity to join the community garden as well. Some of the local producers participating in the market include Dayton Valley Aquaponics, Little Busy Bee Farm, and Misbeehavin Farm. In new developments, this year the Dayton Farmers Market has partnered with VegasRoots to offer the Double Up Food Bucks Program, which offers a matching monetary amount up to $20 when people use their SNAP benefits at the market. The Dayton Farmers Market is located at the corner of Highway 50 and 2nd Street in Dayton, in front of the new Solidarity Garden. — Thursday Night Cruise at Wing Stop. 5 p.m. Meet at 3965 South Carson Street. Thursday Night Cruise runs weekly through July 25 and is open to all cars and trucks. The cruise nights include a 50/50 raffle with other prizes. Food from the local sponsors will be available, also The Bus Boy will be at Hooten Tire Co. for the July 18th show. All are welcome, have fun and enjoy the vehicles.
— Carson City Parks and Recreation to host Ross Gold Park master plan information meeting. 5:30 p.m. Ross Gold Park is one of the oldest parks within the City’s park system and is located at 280 Appion Way. As part of the efforts to reinvest in aging park infrastructure, the City released a survey in April, 2019 to get the community’s input on changes to the park’s master plan. The survey results have been complied, analyzed, and the City would appreciate the opportunity to discuss the comments received from the community. A public information meeting will be held at Fire Station No. 53 located at 4649 Snyder Avenue from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 27, 2019.
— Scientists to talk about climate change threats, opportunities at Carson City lecture. 6 p.m. Eminent scientists Dr. Charles Goldman, Dr. Sudeep Chandra and other panelists will be featured guests at Western Nevada College in Carson City where they will talk about local impacts of droughts, floods, fires and warming temperatures on the regional economy and future generations. There will be an opportunity to ask questions during the open discussion portion of the program. The event is free and refreshments will be provided. — Live Music at Glen Eagles Restaurant. 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at 3700 N. Carson St., Carson City. Enjoy live music that is sure to make you get up and dance every Wednesday through Saturday starting at 6:30 to 9 p.m.
— Lecture details lives of immigrant Chinese woodcutters at the Nevada State Museum. 6:30 to 8 p.m. at 600 N. Carson St. Chinese immigrants were abundant in the mining camps of the Sierra Nevada in the latter half of the 19th century. In the 1860s, the first Chinese immigrants found their way to Aurora, Nevada and by the 1870s, they had settled along King Street in Bodie, California, creating a sizeable Chinatown. By the 1880s, they cornered the woodcutting market, providing cordwood and charcoal to neighboring residents, businesses, and ranches.The immigrants left behind few written records of their own, but they are recorded in the historical documents of others, as well as in the artifacts and sites they left behind. Some of the artifacts and photos of the sites made up the heart of the exhibition, “Fueling the Boom: Chinese Woodcutters in the Great Basin,” at the Nevada State Museum in Carson City.
— President of Northern Nevada Development Authority to present at Carson City Republican Membership Meeting. 6:30 p.m. Rob Hooper, President of Northern Nevada Development Authority will be the featured guest at the Carson City Republican Membership Meeting on June 27. Join us at the Casino Fandango for networking beginning at 6:30 p.m. The meeting starts at 7 p.m. The public is welcome to attend. Rob is the President and CEO of NNDA (Northern Nevada Development Authority). — WNC Continuing Education offers Zumba class. 5:45 p.m. Zumba is a dance form and aerobics fitness program. Zumba involves dance and aerobic movements performed to energetic Latin and pop music from countries around the world. The choreography incorporates hip hop, soca, samba, salsa, meringue and mambo. Squats and lunges are also included. Students should wear comfortable clothing and tennis shoes, and bring a towel, water and a positive attitude! No prior dance experience is required - Zumba is about making friends, getting a workout, and enjoying yourself! — Nevada Arts Council Presents: Bits and Pieces of the Silver State. 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Reno artist Patricia Wallis has a background in plein air painting as well as aerial painting working on canvas, board and copper. Over the past decade she has worked exclusively on copper which gives the image a unique luminescence not found when working with canvas or board. Oil painting on copper goes back to the 15th century although it is rarely used by contemporary artists. Bits and Pieces of the Silver State feature the various elements of nature and provide conceptual basis inn Wallis’ paintings. Go here for more information about Nevada Arts Council.
— Dance Workshop for Couples at Yaple's Ballroom. In this beginner level workshop you must have a partner in this class, we will not be rotating. It can be a friend, husband, wife, boyfriend or girlfriend, you just have to have a buddy with you to be your partner. We are going to learn the style of dance of Night Club Two Step and some other exercises that will help you with your connection to your partner. $20. — Capital City Arts Initiative presents 'The Lay of the Land' at Carson City showing. The Capital City Arts Initiative presents an exhibition, "The Lay of the Land," by artist Fred Howland in the Community Center’s Sierra Room, 851 E William Street, Carson City. The exhibition runs now through June 30, 2019. Howland’s passion is to create a sense of time and place through his photographs. He returns to favorite sites to work, like Hope Valley and Genoa, returning to take repeat images in different seasons and lighting. His interest in landscapes go back to his New England roots where he was more comfortable in the outdoors than in school classrooms. The Sierra Room is open to the public during Carson City official meetings including the first and third Thursdays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and many afternoons, Monday through Thursday, 5 to 8 p.m.
